2. Students possess general skills such as basic content level reading, appropriate quantitative skills, and adequate degrees of fluency in writing and articulateness in expression
3. Students will become acquainted with the basic language, terminology, or methodology of the subject itself.
4. Students are, in each subject, at a stage of understanding where they can, with appropriate scaffolding, form conclusions, develop experiments, and/or explorations.

300-level course designation: Courses of advanced difficulty taken by upper-division students. These are often considered to be courses in the concentration offered for students clearly interested and qualified in a subject.
Assumptions and Expectations:
1. Students are at ease and comfortable with the terminology and basic concepts in the field; they have acquired adequate general knowledge in the area to pursue some study in-depth with instruction in the proper methodological tools.
2. Students have the ability to do research or to obtain relevant information in the field through the proper use of libraries and digital resources.
3. Students are fluent in the language of the field so as to read and analyze relevant information.
4. Students are able to combine the results of the research or reading into cohesive arguments.
5. Students are able to produce substantial work such as a paper of "term-paper" length, or a creative or experimental project. Papers are generally held to 9-15 pages.
6. Significant, authentic internships or field related assignments in the discipline of study are highly encouraged.
400-level course designation: Advanced upper-division courses, seminars, practicums, or internships for upper division students.
Assumptions and Expectations
1. Students have completed a substantial amount of work on the 300 level and/or are concurrently taking 300 level classes.
2. Students have the capacity to work independently under the guidance or supervision of an instructor.
3. Students complete a research project or paper. While the ‘capstone’ project/paper is expected to be 20 -25 pages in length, other courses would generally be in the 15-20 page range.
4. Significant, authentic internships in the field are highly encouraged.
Students will develop the skills necessary in specific disciplines that includes engaging
as well as interdisciplinary explorations that broaden critical thinking skills. Papers assigned as assessment at this
level are generally held to 5-8 pages.
